Improperly discarded, abandoned or lost fishing nets float around for hundreds of years. This causes immense ecological damage. Net-Works® is a program to combat this huge environmental challenge of discarded fishing nets in the poorest coastal regions in the world.
The multinational Interface has partnered with the Zoological Society of London to buy discarded fishing nets from some of the poorest communities in the world. The nets are recycled into new yarn by Aquafil and used for Interface’s carpet tiles.
Waste does not exist in the natural world. All resources are used over and over again.
The benefits: Fewer ghost nets, less virgin materials and a new source of income for the communities. The partnership has created an inclusive business model with positive outcomes for everyone involved.
The Net-Works program proves collaborative innovation can create positive, sustainable change.
